Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture essentially consists of 3 parts:
1) Theoretical part - the most important mathematical and physical basics of acoustics and vibration theory are explained in a comprehensible form and occasionally compared with examples from nature (physiological, ecological).
2) Practical technical part - extensive information on recording, storage and analysis technology is provided. (Microphones, amplifiers, recorders, sound level meters, bat detectors, filters, sound file processing, sound analysis, etc.). For a more detailed explanation, the lecturer will bring devices and can try them out.
3) Demonstrations - In the third part, examples from nature are given (models and videos) and additional reports are given on special cases and particularly interesting phenomena as well as current research topics.

Beyond the scope of the lecture, there is the possibility of forming discussion and working groups with those who are particularly interested. as well as other topics to be dealt with on request.

Assessment and permitted materials

Examination - oral or written depending on the number of participants.

Written: The examinees are asked 8 questions - 4 very short and 4 somewhat longer ones. One point is awarded for correctly answering the short questions, and three points each for correctly answering the longer ones. Half points are also awarded. The maximum number of points that can be achieved is 16.
Clef: 14-16 points...1, 11-13...2, 8-10...3, 5-7...4, 0-4...5

Oral (with a very small number of participants approx. 1-5):
3 questions are asked, each of which is asked about a sub-topic and discussed with the examinees. Each question is graded individually and the overall grade is calculated.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Achievement requirements: examination and grading - see above.
The knowledge acquired should be sufficient to be able to enter bioacoustic research at any time. Particular attention is paid to capturing the logical connections.

Examination topics

The examination material is essentially the content of the lecture. During the event, participants will be informed which content will not be reviewed.

Reading list

Literature information will be provided during the event. Books are brought along for viewing and literature lists are distributed to the participants. Scripts are distributed on some topics.
