Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This computer-based laboratory exercises is provided for students of the second part of all branches of study in Biology but also provided in Computer Science, Landscape Planing and Geography.
Content: This computer-based laboratory exercise will develop basic and practical skills of handling spatial data in a specific GIS environment (ESRI ArcGIS 10 and QGIS).
Attendance of the associated lecture is compulsory - theory taught there is the basis for the exercises in the computer-lab!
Main topics will ba:
-Data Acquisition and Integration
-Data generation
-spatial reference systems
-Catography
-Analyses of spatial data
-Data(base) Management

In the lab ten PCs are available, so five participants have to bring their own Laptop to work on. We will work with the package ArcGIS from ESRI (get your student licence from ZID!) and with the FOSS package QGIS, both in their actual versions

Assessment and permitted materials

work on exercises during the course and upload of results (Moodle)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Three out of four exercises have to be positive for completion of the course. Details for each exercise are given in the course.
