Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The flowering plants (angiosperms) represent the most significant radiation in the plant kingdom and they dominate most terrestrial ecosystems. Their evolutionary success is intimately connected with the diversification of floral structure and floral biology. The main goal of this course is to comparatively present the manifold forms and functions of flowers in various taxonomic groups as well as to provide a better understanding of the diversity and evolutionary history of the flowering plants as a whole. Each course unit starts with a short introductory lecture. In the following hands-on practicals, each topic will be presented mainly with the help of fresh plant material from the collections of the botanical garden. Additionally, permanent microscope slides and alcohol preserved floral material will be available. Each course unit is accompanied by a study sheet with a number of tasks to be completed and journalized (descriptions, drawings). The resulting protocols need to be handed in at the end of the course.
Assessment and permitted materials
Presence and active participation during course work, including preparation of a written protocol for each course unit.Short, written exams (one per course unit).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Minimum requirement for positive credit: 12.25 points (of totally 24 points). These 24 points are distributed as follows:
