Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The subject of this lecture will be the basic structure and composition of bacterial, archaeal, and eucaryotic genomes and their evolution. Fundamental mechanisms of molecular evolution will be explained such as gene duplication, genome duplication, gene conversion, exon shuffling, transposition, mutation and conservation of DNA and protein sequences, saturation of observed substitutions, molecular clock. Further, mechanisms and role of lateral gene transfer between procaryotes will be discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

The exam will consist of 6 questions in which you may answer in free form. You will be graded on the accuracy of your answers and the degree to which you addressed all parts of the questions. It is perfectly fine to write your answers in German.

The material will derive exclusively from concepts which are included in the slides, with emphasis on major topics over minor ones, and major results rather than technical details. All of the concepts will be covered on the slides, however they may not be written on the slides.
