300039 VO An Introduction to ethology (2015W)
Labels
Primarily for teacher students. Interested students from other disciplines welcome. Because 1 ECTS is far from sufficient for the field of behavioural biology, it is recommended to attend the seminar 300034 Aktuelle Probleme der Verhaltensbiologie (1 ECTS) in parallel.

Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Introduction to classical and contemporary ethology with an emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches to understand species-specific and individual behaviour. This course combines information from behavioural, ecological, physiological and evolutionary disciplines.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exam (max. 60 min), with 5-6 questions (no multiple choice), resulting in max. 10 points per question. At least one of the questions refers to the didactial concept how to teach a certain topic. In this question, the correct facts are are only judged as 40%, 60% of the points are to be earned by the originality and pupil-orientated teaching concept. At least one more question will be related to the Lamprecht et al. volumes (below).
The date of the first exam (approx. 1 week after the end of the course) will be agreed upon in the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Behavioural biology and „The four levels of Tinbergen“ provide an excellent framework to integrate the multitude of topics to be taught at high school, a way to avoid the pitfall of “trivial persuit” teaching.A main goal is to support an understanding of the integrated evolution of behavioural, anatomical and physiological traits and that the evolution and execution of behaviour follows the same basic rules in all species.
Examination topics
Ppt presentation (will be made available via moodle), discussions.
Reading list
A range of potential textbooks will be shortly introduced in the course.
An important booklet with a collection of practice work with highschool students is by Kotrschal, K.: Grundkurs Verhaltensbiologie. Filander 2000
Als base for teaching behavioural biology in high school:
Lamprecht, Langlet, Schröder: Verhaltensbiologie im Unterricht. Neue Ergebnisse - Neue Konzepte. Bd. 1: Verhaltensökologie. Aulis Verlag Deubner Köln 2002, 116s.
Lamprecht, Langlet, Schröder, Bresser: Verhaltensbiologie im Unterricht. Neue Ergebnisse - Neue Konzepte. Bd. 2: Verhaltensontogenese und Verhaltensmechanismen 2003
Both Din-A4 format, approx 22¤ each (vertrieb@aulis.de). If no longer available please check the Bio-library. Can also be borrowed from K. Kotrschal.
A selection of seminal paper regarding the central topics of the course will be made available to the registered students via moodle, as also towards the end of the lecture the pp presentation.
