The validity of the theory of island biogeography of MacArthur & Wilson (1967) will be discussed on the basis of recent publications. Additionally, the seminar will focus on the following topics: species communities on continental and oceanic islands; reconstruction of island colonization based on molecular data; speciation processes and adaptive radiation on islands; islands as "relict areas"; threats to island faunas; "habitat islands". This seminar is obligatory for participants of the "Field Course in Animal Ecology: Biogeography of the Krakatau Islands (Indonesia)".
