Aims, contents and method of the course
The course gives an introduction into the fundamentals of behavioral observation and its statistical analysis as an interactive training course. The topics include observation and categorization, time-structured data collection techniques, empirical and statistical behavior analysis. Using film material together with predefined sampling and recording schemes as well as class work in the field, the students will learn to record behavior systematically via paper-and-pencil as well as digitally. The Observer is professional software for collection, analysis, presentation and management of observational data. This way, an understanding of the basic sampling and recording rules will be built up. The aim is to teach the skills to choose among the basic sampling and recording rules as well as analyses the best fitting ones for a given research question and to design one's own configuration for data collection and analyses.
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation, presentation of a scientific article/book chapter, practical final project (documentation of direct behavioral observation including field journal; presentation [whether oral or written is yet to be announced depending on the number of participants and the kind of project] and answers to questions).
To safeguard good academic practice, the lecturer may ask students to reflect on their written assignements in a conversation. Students must successfully pass this reflection.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
At least 51 points and at least 80% attendance are required for the positive completion of the course.Performance will be weighted as follows: Active participation (20 points), presentation of a scientific article/book chapter (20 points), practical final project (documentation of direct behavioral observation including field journal: 30 points; presentation [whether oral or written is yet to be announced depending on the number of participants and the kind of project] and answers to questions: 30 points).A total of 100 points can be achieved. The following grading scale applies: Grade 1: 87 to 100 points, Grade 2: 75 to 86.99 points, Grade 3: 63 to 74.99 points, Grade 4: 51 to 62.99 points, Grade 5: < 51 points.
Examination topics
Short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, video training, and small individual tasks.
