Aims, contents and method of the course
This lecture deals with the origin of the Mediterranean area, its geography and geology. Furthermore, it covers the Mediterranean climate and the respective physiological and morphological adaptations of Mediterranean plants. An overview of the major Mediterranean communities and their most important constituent species as well as their biogeographic relationships is given.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students possess an overview on origin and climatic conditions in the Mediterranean and can define the morphoplogical and physiological adaptations to that climate. Furthermore, they know the most important vegetation types and their constituent species as well as their biogeographic relationships.
