Presentation and short introduction of the course: 2.3.2016 between 8:00-8:45 at ÜR2. Course dates: 16.3., 6.4., 13.4. between 8:00-12:30 at ÜR2.
Excursion: 20.4. between 8:00 and 12:00 including processing of the samples at ÜR 2 till 14:00.
Exam: 27.4.2016 between 8:00-11:30, ÜR 2.


Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This special course offers training for identification of central European recent ostracods. It includes theory on morphology and anatomy, biology and ecology, geographical distribution and biodiversity, economic value, systematics and phylogeny of the group. The laboratory work includes observation of living animals, preparation technics and identification of species. Sampling technics of dwelling ostracods in benthic and hypogean habitats of Lobau near Vienna is shown.
Exam: Determination of selected species, questions about the biology of ostracods, evaluation of the participation on the course and excursion.

Assessment and permitted materials

Exam (written exam): Determination of 3 to 4 species (60%), questions about the biology of rotifers (30%), active participation on the course and attendance of excursion (10%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Examination topics

Each unit includes a theorical introduction to the biology of the group and a laboratory part dedicated to learn practical methods of slide preparation of ostracods and taxonomy of the species.
