Two 1 day excursions will take place in May. The dates are not yet fixed and will be discussed in the introductory lecture.

Before the excursions, two introductory seminars of 4 hs each are compulsory.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The excursion leads to habitats in in Steiermark and in Salzburg that are rich in heavy metals which occur either naturally in the soil or derive from man-made industrial activities. We discuss the tolerance of the heavy metal plants against heavy metal stress, and we discuss the strategies of tolerant, accumulating and hyper-accumulating plants to survive in heavy metal contaminated soil.
This shalll improve our understanding of the general situation of heavy metal rich habitats and the vegetation that developed on these toxic soils.

Assessment and permitted materials

personal contributions during the excursion
written protocol
oral presentation of the results in a final Seminar

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Basic knowledge of Ecology and Plant Sciences should have been acquired during the first semesters of the Bachelor Curriculum. The parrticipation at the excursion days as well as at the introductory and final seminars is required. Protocol and presentation will be evaluated with each 50%.

Examination topics

Specific conditions of heavy metal rich soil
toxicity of heavy metals for plants
strategies of tolerant, accumulating and hyper-accumulating metallophytes to survive in heavy metal contaminated soil.

Reading list

Relevant literature will be provided during the introductory seminars and the excursion.
