Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The lecture covers lake types from high mountains in the west to the steppe like lowlands in the east of Austria. The abiotic and biological processes and interactions are described for natural and man-made lakes of varying size, depth and mixing type. Phytoplankton and zooplankton and their interaction are in the focus of the lecture, but all other biological components will be discussed if data availability allows. Moreover, past developments (eutrophication, acidification etc.), present status (water framework directive ao.), usage (power industry, tourism etc.) and likely future changes (climate warming, invasive species ao.) will be considered. The aim of the lecture is to depict the limnological interrelations in lakes exemplified by selected examples.
