Aims, contents and method of the course

Introduction to the fundamentals of optical methods of analysis; properties of electromagnetic radiation; electronic transitions; vibrational/rotational transitions; quantitative aspects of absorption measurements; instruments for absorption in the ultraviolet, visible and mid-infrared regions; molecular fluorescence spectroscopy, theory; chemiluminescence, bioluminescence; atomic absorption, atomic emission spectroscopy; atomic spectra; quantitative aspects and instruments.
Nomenclature and terms used in mass spectrometry; sample introduction an ion sources; desorption and ionisation techniques (EI, CI, FAB, PD, MALDI and ESI); mass analyzer (magnetic sector, quadrupol and time of flight); ion detectors; data systems
