Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This practical seminar introduces the major computational methods necessary to process, analyse and interpret shotgun metagenomic sequences in theory and practice. Main topics are metagenome assembly, binning, taxonomic characterization, and annotation. Students simulate individual metagenomes first, and test the relevant computational approaches on them. Based on this experience, real metagenomes from recent research projects are analyzed in the second part of the seminar.
Assessment and permitted materials
Paper presentation; oral progress reports; written work report.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Basic knowledge in Bioinformatics and Genomics (as e.g. teached in lecture 300311) are required for participation in this seminar.
Examination topics
This practical seminar will consist of theoretical (lecture like) introductions to the topics, discussion of selected scientific papers and practical exercises in the computer room.
Reading list
Will be provided during the seminar.
Association in the course directory
