It includes theory on morphology and anatomy, biology and ecology, geographical distribution and biodiversity, economic value, systematics and phylogeny of the group. The laboratory work includes observation of living animals, preparation technics and identification of species (using characters of the shale as well as of the soft tissues). Sampling technics of dwelling ostracods in benthic and hypogean habitats of the Lobau near Vienna is shown.
Exam: Determination of selected species, questions about the biology of ostracods, evaluation of the participation on the course and excursion.

Assessment and permitted materials

Qualification: Written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Exam (written exam): Determination of 3 to 4 species (60%), questions about the biology of rotifers (30%), active participation on the course and attendance of excursion (10%).

Examination topics

Each unit includes a theorical introduction to the biology of the group and a laboratory part dedicated to learn practical methods of slide preparation of ostracods and taxonomy of the species.
