Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture is directed to all students interested in this subject and prepared to participate actively without special pre-condition and deals with the following issues: Legal standards and the concept of sustainability as a basis for the interpretation of the state of the environment (who provides information, and who are the decision makers in Austria, in the EU and at the international level?). Who needs what type of information (politician, administration, technician, general public) and what is the adequate level of aggregation? How environmental information is generated (science, administration etc.). The right on information (Arhus -Convention, Environmental Information Directive and the Austrian Law on Environmental Information). Technical framework condition for storage, preparation and transfer of information. Reporting obligations in Austria, to the European Commission, to the European Environment Agency, the OECD etc.). The compilation of environmental information with data on health and sociological and economic data. Focus of the seminar: Environment in the new Member States of the European Union.
