Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Communication is crucial in science. Writing is a key part of this, and yet the subject is rarely if ever taught to young students. The variety of forms of writing that a scientist ought to be prepared for is wide and includes papers, books, theses, grant applications and popular articles. In addition, more and more scientists are required to communicate via the various forms of social media. Graphical abstracts and professional illustrating can make the difference between a publication in a high ranked journal as opposed to a more routine lower impact publication. Presenting and publicising the results of one’s work is also increasingly becoming a vital part of any scientific career.
In this course the student will learn to effectively communicate using written English, in all of these variety of forms. This will be achieved through lectures, small (and enjoyable) tasks, and practical work in groups. Assessment will be continual through the course (via Moodle).

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be a written exam (20%) on selected topics (in English) but the majority of the coursemark will be based on completion of 80% of the writing assignments on Moodle BEFORE the 1st exam date.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To attain the pass grade, more than 50% points are necessary. Grading scheme: 1 (excellent): 85-100%; 2 (good): 75-84.99%; 3 (satisfactory): 65-74.99%; 4 (sufficient): 50-64.99%; 5 (not sufficient): <50%
