10.00 ECTS (6.00 SWS), SPL 30 - Biologie
Continuous assessment of course work

max. 6 participants
Language: German, English

mandatory preliminary talk: 5.3.2018, 10.00 a.m. seminar room Limnology (floor 3, between Spange 3 and 4). During the term, 3-halfday-introduction meetings 8dates will be announced suring the preliminary talk), thereafter 1-week field course from 4.6. to 10.6.2018 at the marine biology station Rovinj (Croatia).

Aims, contents and method of the course

Did you know that around 45% of atmospherical oxigen is produced by algae? This exercise offers insights into physiology of marine macroalgae, a group which is partly used for industrial purposes. Hypotheses will be proposed and afterwards tested by means of in-situ measurements and lab experiments. This year, the photosynthetic performance and calcification of selected species will be in the focus. Language will be either German or English according to requirements.

Assessment and permitted materials

20% participation within the exercise
20% final oral presentation
60% final report (Bachelor thesis)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Basic knowledge of the most important marine macralgae groups, practical experiences in presentation

Examination topics

field collection of algae and measurements of some environmental variables, fluorescence techniques, use of appropriate computer programs

Reading list

will be suggested and offered via moodle
