Island biogeography & metacommunity theory

Dispersal limitation in microscopic world with focus on plankton communities

Diversity among biomes: Aquatic vs terrestrial, freshwater vs marine

Productivity-diversity relationships in aquatic systems

Diversity-functioning relationships I: traits and functioning

Diversity functioning relationships II: BEF in an homogenous environment

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam at the end of the lecture

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Learn about the mechanisms regulating diversity in aquatic systems
Gain mechanistic understanding for the role of diversity for ecosystem functioning.
Become acquainted with central concepts with regard to aquatic systems: Island Biogeography - lakes as inverted islands; Metacommunity Theory; Biodiervsity-functioning hypothesis; species-energy hypothesis
