Eurasian paleolithic societies: archaeology, paleoanthropology and paleogenomics
Aims, contents and methods
Aim: To introduce students to archaeological, biological, cultural, and behavioural aspects of the evolution of Palaeolithic human societies across Eurasia.
The course contents will cover the prehistory of Eurasia covering the emergence , existence and extinction of Homo erectus and archaic Homo species across Asia, am overview of key Lower, Middle and Upper Paleolithic Eurasian archaeological sites, s, the emergence of anatomically modern humans and 'Out of Africa" hypotheses, behavioural modernity and the evolution of cultures, human dispersals ito Eurasia, across Eurasia and beyond, coexistence and introgresison between various human species, major recent contributions from the field of paleogeneomics, human evolutionary morphology. A particular emphasis will be placed on critical reading of select sources, a review paper, presentations and discussions.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

1. Understand major aspects in human biological, cultural and behavioural evolution
2. Appreciate both biological and cultural evolution in terms of integrated and continuous adaptation to the environment and resources.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of the major features of the relevant Eurasian fossil and archaeological records.
4. Understand the relevant contributions made by archaeological sciences and paleogeneomics

Learning outcomes:
Students who successfully complete this module will be able to:

1. Understand major aspects in human biological, cultural and behavioural evolution
2. Appreciate both biological and cultural evolution in terms of integrated and continuous adaptation to the environment and resources.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of the major features of the relevant Eurasian fossil and archaeological records.
4. Extract information from a range of sources and present a written synthesis in response to a question.
