For verifying the ecologal integry of aquatic ecosystems, organisms hold a pivotal position. This course introduces to trophic indication by means of benthic algal communities. Besides an introduction of the most important algal groups with special focus on diatoms, basics of biomonitoring are discussed. The practical part of the course covers an excursion to water bodies with different levels of pollution and permanent slides will be prepared from the living material. Obtained data will be used for calculation of trophic indices, and based on these indices the ecological status of the sampling sites will be evaluated.
