Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Knowledge of characteristic animals of Australia, in particular terrestrial vertebrates. Understanding distribution patterns as results of evolutionary history and current climate. Insight in relations of morphology and ecology of animals. Comparison of environmental conditions in the landscapes of Australia and their influence on reproductive biology of animals. Insight into ecological interactions and the consequences of perturbations of ecosystems by the actions of humans.

Systematic overview of the tetrapods of Australia, including distribution and phylogeny of their major groups, with a focus on the radiation of marsupials. Detailed accounts of ecology and behaviour of selected species, supported by numerous audiovisual documents. Introduction to the climate and landscapes of Australia, and to ecological interactions among animals and between animals and plants. Changes of landscapes and fauna due to human activities.
