Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: Students acquire knowledge on scientific work in the natural sciences, on how to search for and further process scientific literature, conduct and write up a scientific paper, and present it. This should enable the prospective teachers to keep up with up-to-date scientific literature and supervising and grading pre-scientific papers (Vorwissenschaftliche Arbeiten).

Contents: The seminar intends to convey strategies and a toolkit for a literature search and a comprehensive literature review on a specific topic. Topics include technical didactics in biology, general zoological and anthropological topics that are also reflected in the school curriculum. The acquired expertise shall be summarized in an integrative way, i.e., not just summarizing the literature but also critically discussing it.
Each student chooses one of the listed foci for their work. Individual topics will be outlined in the preparatory meeting. Students will be distributed equally among the foci.
Non-binding list of topics below; topics will be assigned during the kick-off meeting.

**Focus plants and amber [Leyla Jean Seyfullah, 3 Theses, Thesis work and writing in English]

** Focus behavioral physiology, behavioral biology in animals [Matthias Nemeth, 3 Theses]

**Focus Botany and Didactics of Biology (Botany/Ecology) [Michael Kiehn, 3 Theses]

Focus Evolutionary Anthropology: literature review [Martin Fieder, 5 Theses], literature review [Sylvia Kirchengast, 2 Theses], small original research study [Sonja Kuderer, 5 Theses] or original research study or literature review focusing on human behavioral biology [Sonja Windhager, 2 Theses]

** Focus small original research studies using questionnaires [evolution, creationism, paranormal belief], didactics of biology [Erich Eder, 3 theses]

**Focus Evolution Vertebrata [Doris Nagel, 5 Theses]

**Focus Hygienics – Medical Biology [Kerstin Steindl-Kuscher, 4 Theses]

** Focus Palynology [Christa Hofmann, 5 Theses]

** Focus Biodiversity: Small original research study in the context of the scientific project BaF – Biodiversity at graveyards [Thomas Filek, 5 Theses]

**Focus Zoology: literature review (insects) [Harald Krenn, 3 Theses]

More details on the specific topics on the German version of this page. Please send an email to S. Windhager if you need further translations.

Method of the course: Introductory lectures including demonstrations in databases and relevant software to teach the necessary skills to conduct a scientific literature review and present it orally to an audience of specialists; guided empirical work and writing up of a thesis on a specific topic.
