Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the lecture is to provide an overview of ethical and legal issues related to biological research that are currently included in ethics reviews at a national and international level. The aim is to provide students and researchers with a toolset that will enable them to identify such issues early on at the research design level. Furthermore, concrete measures will be presented on how those issues are currently addressed in ethics reviews. These concrete risk mitigation concepts will empower students and researchers to go beyond the identification of ethical and moral dilemmas and to implement ethics safeguards relevant to the research that are in line with international and national ethical standards.
The lecture will address key ethical issues related to biological research like the involvement of human subjects in research, data protection/privacy, animal testing, environmental and human safety issues and research integrity.
The focus in all presentations will be on hands-on guidance in resolving practical research questions. The presentations will be held in English.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirement is a basic understanding of research ethics and its application in solving an ethical dilemma in the context of research. Grades will be based on the outcome of the multiple-choice test.
