Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course teaches the fundamentals of science communication, with a focus on effectively conveying scientific information in the field of biology. Participants will learn to communicate scientific findings to various target audiences, using examples such as climate change communication. The course covers core topics including the basics of science communication, essential do's and don’ts, and the use of various communication formats, such as texts and visuals.

The course is divided into three main units. The first unit introduces the basics of science communication and different communication formats. The second unit focuses on creating scientific texts such as press releases and social media posts. The third unit is dedicated to designing infographics and visual content for science communication.

Participants will learn and apply both classic and digital communication methods, including journalistic concepts and social media strategies. By the end of the course, students should be able to create press releases, postings, and infographics/images appropriate for their scientific work and tailored for target groups to achieve effective science communication.

Assessment and permitted materials

A positive assessment requires attendance and active participation on all course days. The assessment is based on two key components: active participation during the course exercises (50%) and timely completion of assignments between course sessions (50%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Prerequisite for participation in the course is a timely online registration. Completing the course with a positive assessment requires active participation on the first four course days as well as timely and complete submission of all in- and between-course exercises. Participants can work on the assignments independently using the documents provided in the course units and via Moodle. They are actively supported in this by the course leader.

Examination topics

The course does not have a separate examination. Instead, students are assessed based on their attendance and participation during all course days, as well as the timely and complete submission of in-class and between-class exercises.

Reading list

The reading list and additional materials will be provided during the course.
