Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students learn essential concepts in evolutionary and population genomics from next-generation sequencing data including genome assembly, detecting Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) and Copy Number Variants (CNV´s), genomic investigation procedures to trace natural selection during adaptation and speciation, Genome Wide Association Scanning (GWAS) in wild species, genomic and geographic clines and the impact of hybridization and gene flow on genomes, structural and functional aspects of genomes, and gene-environment interactions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Scientific discussion on selected topics of students' interest

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students understand the essential concepts behind current key genomic approaches for studying variation, adaptation, and speciation in plants, animals, and other organisms. They are able to choose suitable approaches for addressing specific questions in the modern life sciences in general and in ecology & evolutionary biology in particular. Attendance of the complementary UE 300369 (summer semester) is recommended for students wishing to go deeper into ecological & evolutionary genomics during their MSc or PhD projects.
