PREPARATORY MEETING: Thursday, Oct 13, 12:00-13:00, Small seminar room of the Department of Anthropology (UZA 1, behind the porter's lodge)
The dates for the preparatory meeting, the oral interim presentation and the deadline for the term paper are still to be announced. There will be eight introductory lectures (1.5 hours each; further can be added if necessary, in UZA 1, Althanstrasse 14). The dates of these lectures will be scheduled after consulting the participants of this course.Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Aims: Students acquire knowledge on how to search for and further process scientific literature, conduct and write up a scientific paper as well as present it orally. This should enable the prospect teachers keeping up with up to date scientific literature, and supervising and grading pre-scientific papers (Vorwissenschaftliche Arbeiten).Contents: The seminar intends to convey strategies and a tool-kit for a literature search and a comprehensive literature review on a specific topic. Topics include technical didactics in biology, general zoological and anthropological topics that are also reflected in the school curriculum. The acquired expertise shall be summarized in an integrative way both orally and in written form, i.e. not just summarizing the literature, but discussing it critically.Method of the course: Introductory lectures including demonstrations in data bases and relevant software to teach the necessary skills to conduct a scientific literature review and present it orally to an audience of specialists; guided writing up of a literature review on a specific topic.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written prospectus, oral interim presentation including slides, term paper: scientific paper following the rules of the natural sciences.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
A minimum of 50 points is required for the successful completion of the course. The single components are weighted as follows: written prospectus (10 points), oral interim presentation (30 points), term paper (60 points).
