Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Introduction to the Practices in Cell Physiology. The following experiments of the topics are explained and discussed:
- Analysis of the cell: light and electron microscopical methods
- Dynamics of the cytoplasm, of cells, of mitosis
- Detection and Identification of cytoplasmic structures:
immunofluorescence, organelle-specific dyes, micromanipulation
- Permeability of the plasma membrane
- Cell wall of plant cells: synthesis, structure and function
- The plant cell as osmotic system
- Stress tolerance of plant cells
Mosses with different ecological preferences are used as model systems, as these differences are mainly based in different physiological properties of the cytoplasm.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in the course (30%), protocol (40%) and oral presentation (30%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Knowledge of the techniques and research fields of cell physiology as a basis for the understanding of the adaptation of cells to their ecologic situations.
Planning, realization, evaluation and publication of experimental studies.

Examination topics

Light- and electronmicroscopy, correlative microscopy, live cell imaging
immuno-techniques
