Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Current questions and methods of population biology will be applied to amphibian populations in Vienna. Research will focus on fire salamanders, comparing populations breeding in streams and in stagnant water. Three working groups will focus on the following topics: larval development (phenology and growth), recapture analysis (fotographic registration of individuals, to estimate population sizes and home ranges), population genetics (DNA extraction with buccal swabs, microsatellite analysis of genetic diversity).
Assessment and permitted materials
Assessment of practical work and written reports.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Understanding of current topics in evolutionary ecology and population genetics, knowledge of life histories of native amphibians, ability to apply research methods of population biology in field and laboratory, practice in writing scientific reports.
Examination topics
Discussion of scientific papers, practical research in small teams in field and laboratory, data analysis and writing of reports.
