Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students are introduced to scientific methods related to behavioral and cognitive biology. Topics of the lecture include development of research questions, experimental design and sampling methods, literature research, statistical analysis, and scientific dissemination.

Theoretical knowledge about methods is introduced in lectures, followed by practical exercises applying those methods to research projects in small groups. Students will carry out every step of a research project (proposal, analyses, dissemination) excepting data collection. This project will be presented as a scientific poster at the end of the course.

Assessment and permitted materials

Presence (obligatory because of group work, practices, presentations, analyses) and participation in all classes (continuous assessment of course work/prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung)
assignments: project proposal, oral project presentation (November 25), statistical analyses (December 16)
preparation and presentation of a scientific poster (January 27)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance (required during the course; one absence is permitted without consequences, two absences result in a deduction of 10 points, three or more absences will result in a negative assessment; note that missing a class with an assignment also results in losing the points for this assignment) and participation in all classes, assignments (project proposal, oral project presentation, statistical analyses), preparation and presentation of a scientific poster.

Assessment criteria:
Attendance and participation: max. 25 points
Assignments: max. 35 points
Poster: max. 40 points

Grading:
88 – 100 points: Very good (1)
75 – 87 points: Good (2)
63 – 74 points: Satisfactory (3)
50 – 62 points: Adequate (4)
0 – 49 points: Unsatisfactory (5)
