Extreme environmental conditions determine the scope of life in the alpine region. Using selected examples factors and processes will be illustrated which effect the distribution and abundance of animals in the different alpine habitats. Another major theme which will be treated concerns the adaptations of organisms to high mountain conditions. Furthermore, anthropogenic caused changes to alpine ecosystems and aspects of nature conservation of these regions will be addressed
