Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Based on the knowledge and skills acquired in the course 'Submicroscopical anatomy and practical electron microscopy' (300674, 300211) the main topic of this course is a project centering on the detection of heavy metals in plants and animal tissues by means of x-ray microanalysis. An introduction is also given in electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), the use of unstained ultrathin, and of semithin sections in the TEM and cryosectioning. The investigations are made on the filtering TEM Zeiss EM 902 and on the digital SEM Philips XL-20.

Assessment and permitted materials

Workshop, poster, protocol, oral examination

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Presentation of a project on heavy metal contamination and stress of animals and plants. An additional aim is the knowledge of special SEM and TEM-methods and of cryotechniques for sample preparation.

Examination topics

EELS, ESI, Contrast Tuning, ESEM, EDAX, BSE, Dot-Mapping, SD - cryosections
