Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The rich fauna and flora of so called "waste land", as dry grass ecosystems, has been conserved by grazing management during centuries. With the cessation of the traditional cultivation natural succession proceeded and big areas of this former open ecosystems are in a bad ecological condition now or have vanished. Theoretical introduction lectures prepare the students for practical field work by clear cutting.
The course includes also 2 excursions to dry grass areas in eastern and northern Lower Austria. A 3rd excursion concerns with clear cutting along the historical important walls around the small city of Drosendorf an der Thaya

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Nature protection is not a matter of theoretical conception! Sensitive and steady practical nature conservation activities only can preserve the rich biodiversity of the old and precious cultural landscape. Important is to understand that the loss of each square meter of intact, natural cultural landscape is also a losing of cultural identity.
