Aims, contents and method of the course

Did you know that around 45% of atmospherical oxigen is produced by algae? This exercise offers insights into the fascinating world of algae, a group which is significantly involved in global flow patterns. Major algae groups will be discussed and important representatives will be introduced (light microscope, CLSM and SEM). Additionally, we offer an introduction into phylogenetic analyses and latest results of algal relationships. Language will be either German or English according to requirements.

Assessment and permitted materials

40% participation within the exercise
20% oral examination
40% final presentation

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Knowledge of the most important algal grous and some characteristic representatives, use of algal identification keys, introduction into algae preparation, PCS, sequencing and phylogenetics analyses, practical experiences in presentation

Examination topics

field collection of algae and measurements of some environmental variables, light and electron microskopy, Microfotography, DNA-Extraction, use of appropriate computer programs
