Aims, contents and method of the course

Did you know that around 45% of atmospherical oxigen is produced by algae? This exercise offers insights into the fascinating world of algae, a group which is significantly involved in global flow patterns. Major algae groups will be discussed and important representatives will be introduced. We will sample from various habitats, use light and also scanning electron micropes for studying specimens. Additionally, measurements of some environmental variables, microfotography, use of appropriate computer programs will be taught. Language will be either German or English according to requirements. Assessment and permitted materials

Basic knowledge of the most important algal groups and some characteristic representatives, use of algal identification keys, introduction into algae preparation, practical experiences in presentation

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- seminar talk (20 %)- Student activity (30 %)- lab protocol (10 %)- team poster (40 %)All partial performances must be positive to finish the course. Passed with more than 50% positive overall performance

Examination topics

Handouts with key features of algal groups will be provided and additional literature suggested. Information of how to give an oral presentation and how to prepare a scientific report will be provided.
