mandatory introduction meeting: Mo, 4.3.2024, 9.45 Seminar room 1.3 UBB. Two seminars during the summer term, dates will be fixed in the introduction meeting. Field course scheduled from Mo 29.7.2024 10.00 to 5.8.2024 in the woodquarter Schrems GEA Akademie and 7.8 to 8.8.2024 at the Center of Biodiversity Rennweg, Vienna for scanning electron microcospical observations.

Aims, contents and method of the course

Did you know that around 45% of atmospherically oxygen is produced by algae? This exercise offers insights into the fascinating world of algae, a group which is significantly involved in global flow patterns. Major algae groups will be discussed and important representatives will be introduced. We will sample from various habitats, use light and also scanning electron microscopes for studying specimens. Additionally, measurements of some environmental variables, microphotography, use of appropriate computer programs will be taught. Language will be either German or English according to requirements.

Assessment and permitted materials

Basic knowledge of the most important algal groups and some characteristic representatives, use of algal identification keys, introduction into algae preparation, practical experiences in presentation

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- seminar talk (20 %)- Student activity (30 %)- lab protocol (10 %)- team poster (40 %). All partial performances must be positive to finish the course. Passed with more than 50% positive overall performance. In total 100 points, 91-100 = 1, 81-90 = 2, 71-80 = 3, 60-70 = 4, <60 = 5.
