300169 UE Trophic ecology of aquatic ecosystems (2019S)

10.00 ECTS (6.00 SWS), SPL 30 - Biologie
Continuous assessment of course work

max. 12 participants
Language: English

The obligatory preliminary talk takes place on March 6, 2019 at 09:15 in the seminar room limnology (UZA I, 4. Spange, 3. Ebene).
The course will be held from May 6 until May 15 at the Wassercluster in Lunz.

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course, we analyse origin, quality and –energy content of food sources of different fish species in aquatic environments. We investigate feeding ecology of fishes, patterns of food selectivity and their relevance for consumption and production in single species as well as the consequences on the food webs (i.e. bottom up vs. top down effects, trophic cascades, etc.). We will analyse/observe
different fish species, macro-zoobenthos, zooplankton and algae.

Methods: Qualitative and quantitative stomach and gut analyses of fishes, stable isotopes, C/N element analyses, lipids and fatty acid analyses, compound-specific stable isotopes, multivariate analysis, mixing models

Assessment and permitted materials

Collaboration, summary and presentation, written protocol

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

You learn how to plan and to conduct a field survey based on an empirical approach, you will conduct widely used statistical procedures in order to analyse your data, which represents a prerequisite for the interpretation of the results.

Examination topics

For a successful graduation your collaboration is essential. At the end of the course, you will present and discuss the results by means of a short presentation. In a more detailed written protocol you will present the research topic, the applied methods, the observed findings and your interpretations.
