Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course teaches the basics of scientific writing and communication in the field of biology. Through in depth analysis of sections of scientific articles (in English), participants will become familiar with their structure and style. The course includes lectures and exercises, which are worked on individually and/or in small groups. The practical exercises should enable the participants to apply the imparted knowledge to their own needs (e.g., analysis of given scientific texts and text modules; independent writing, revision and optimisation of text examples). Thus, the course helps the participants to independently write and revise a bachelor's or master's thesis according to the general/international standards of academic writing, publishing and communication.

Complementary to this course, the independent block courses "Scientific Writing Workshop" is offered (see ufind for details).

Assessment and permitted materials

For a positive assessment, attendance and active participation on all three course days is required. Specifically, attendance and active participation in the exercises in the course (50%) and active participation in assignments between the courses (50%) are included in the assessment.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Prerequisite for participation in the course is a timely online registration. A positive assessment requires the timely and complete submission of the exercises in and between the course days. The participants can work on the assignments independently using the documents provided in the course units and via Moodle. They will be actively supported by the course leaders.

Examination topics

The course can be completed positively by completing the exercises within and between the course days in full and on time.
