Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This is an advanced course for the genetic model system C. elegans, covering classical forward and reverse genetics, as well as more recent methods of targeted genome editing. A basic understanding of genetics is essential for this course. Completion of the following introductory lecture series is therefore recommended: VO 300557 Principles in Genetics and Developmental Biology.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written protocol, class participation
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Familiarize students with the theory and practice of C. elegans as a genetic model.
Examination topics
- Introduction to C. elegans as an experimental model
- Classical forward genetics incl. genetic mapping and epistasis
- Reverse genetics (RNAi)
- Targeted genome manipulation by Mos-mediated transposition
- Cellular Analysis by immunofluorescence microscopy
- Seminars on current C. elegans research at the VBC campus
