Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course will discuss selected topics based on student preferences such as:
- What is philosophy of biology?
- What distinguishes biology from physics and chmistry?
- Reduction, emergence, multilevel selection
- Limits of adaptation: EvoDevo and Niche Construction
- Big Data biology (bioinformatics, systems biology, synthetic biology)

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in group discussions; Powerpoint presentation on one of the topics at the end of the seminar.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To become acquainted with the way contemporary philosophers of biology deal with conceptual and methodological issues in the life sciences.

Examination topics

Introduction to the themes by the instructor; individual readings; group discussions.
