Classes

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course uses both theoretical and practical approaches to understand the quality of the fossil record of basal vertebrates and the diversity of their tissue types (scales, cartilage, bones, teeth) and cranial morphologies within an evolutionary context.
By the end of this course, students should be able to: (1) Compare and contrast the various tissues and cranial morphology of each of the major non-mammalian vertebrate taxa, (2) evaluate the classification of a mystery non-mammalian vertebrate based on morphological characters, (3) predict whether structures in different non-mammalian vertebrate taxa are homologous and (4) identify the major characters that evolved in the evolutionary history of non-mammalian vertebrates.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be two continual assessments, each of which will account for 50% of the total mark. The evaluation is based on points.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

More than 60% must be achieved from both continual assessments.

Examination topics

Identification and brief explanation (morphological characteristics) for the classification of skeletal material.
