Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Students will be introduced to the process of naming and delimiting animal species and higher taxa (genera, families, etc.). Considerations and pitfalls when applying those names in practice will be discussed. The first part of this lecture will provide an introduction the ICZN code for zoological nomenclature. Requirements for valid species descriptions and guidelines for naming of taxa will be discussed. Potential problems when applying the zoological code and how to deal with those problems in practice will be presented. General considerations concerning the management of zoological collections with special focus on type specimens will be discussed. In the second part an introduction to species concepts will be given. Characteristics of frequently used species concepts and their practical implications will be discussed. Recent developments in the field of "molecular taxonomy" will be presented and discussed. The practical application of species concepts will be demonstrated with selected examples.
