Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course will start by recapitulating mathematical and statistical basics. The basic mathematical background (correlation, linear regression) will be explained by doing calculations on computer using data from aquatic ecology. Later on the course consist of lectures on multivaritate statistical methods fequently used in aquatic ecology, e.g. principal component analysis, discrimination analysis, canonical correlation analysis ect. These methods will be immediately applied to data sets from aquatic ecology (mainly limnology) using mainly SPSS. The outcome will be interpreted and several methods will be applied to the same data set. The advantages/disadvantages of the various methods will be discussed. The final step in the course and the examination is the analysis of one data set, which students do in small groups (2-3 students). The results of the analysis will be presented in a short talk. Students are welcome to bring their own data sets. Language: German (English explanations possible)
