Attention: Due to the COVID-19 situation the lecture takes place purely ONLINE asynchronously. All lectures will be recorded by me and the streams will be set up for you in Moodle.
Lecture starts on Oct 12th 2021

On two days there will be an online video session (via "Collaborate" or ZOOM), in which I will enter into dialogue with you and answer questions about the lectures, discuss contents and present the format of the exam.

VL 1: Introduction to biology education research
VL 2: Theory of interest and theory of non-interest
VL3: Students' ideas & theory of Conceptual Change
VL4: Inquiry Learning as scientific problem solving
VL5: The Contextual Model of Learning - Theoretical framework for the assessment of learning processes in museums and other informal learning settings
VL6: Theories for the development and promotion of moral judgment
VL7: Attitudes and values in the empirical construct of young peoples' awareness of nature and environment

Exam dates in presence: 28.01.2022, 08.03.2022, 10.5.2022 and 28.6.2022, each from 18:30-19:30

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture is introducing you to the relevant theories of biology education research, including:
-theories for successful teaching and learning in biology (e.g. students' concepts, interests etc.)
- Theories of the competence area Inquiry Learning
- Theories for assessing learning processes
in natural history museums and other informal learning settings
- Theories on emotional aspects of learning in biology classes
- Theories of attitudes and values in the context of environmental awareness
and others

In addition, selected results from biology didactic research projects are presented for the respective theories.

On the one hand, the lecture is intended to prepare you for possible own research in biology education (e.g. in the context of a master thesis), on the other hand, it's intention is to present evidence-based recommendations for successful and effective biology teaching.

Assessment and permitted materials

The exams are held either online or in person:
1) Written exam in online format 60 min., 2 parts: 1st part: multiple choice questions (with OA), 2nd part: open questions (both parts no open book format)
2) Written exam with presence: 60 minutes, multiple choice and open answer format

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

at least 50% of the maximum number of points are required for a positive completion of the written examination
