300223 VO+SE Photosynthesis and primary production in the sea (2007S)

The course deals with the ecology of phytoplankton and macro algae. Anatomy, physiology, distribution and ecological relevance of various phytoplankton and macro algae species are discussed. Photosynthesis and factors which control this process in the oceans are explained. In the practical sections students learn to identify algal species in microscopical preparations, to determine chlorophyll content and to prepare culture media.
