The field work takes place on 5 days each in the 2nd half of June and the 2nd half of July. Necessary adjustments to the schedule due to Covid-related restrictions will be coordinated with the participants of the field course as early as possible.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Danube floodplains east of Vienna represent one of the last remaining vast stretches of floodplain forests in Central Europe. Embedded within the forest matrix are a large number of meadows. In the framework of this field course we will study the importance of different flooding regimes and meadow management on species assemblages of selected insect groups (butterflies, grasshoppers). We will assess community attributes using adequate field methodology and subsequently evaluate own data using statistical approaches.
Field work will be conducted in the Donau-Auen National Park. If the Covid situation permits overnight stay close to our study sites, costs for accommodation (including breakfast) will be approx. 250 € (approximately 25% of the costs may be reimbursed by the university). If overnight stay will not be not possible, field work will be conducted as day excursions without overnight accommodation.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment of participants will be based on a written report (Bachelor thesis) (contributes 60 % to final mark) and a seminar talk (contributes 40 % to final mark) presenting the results of the conducted research projects.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In addition to the active participation during field work, the submission of the bachelor thesis, the oral presentation of the results, and the achievement of an overall grade of at least 4 are required for successful participation in the course.

Examination topics

Written final report (bachelor thesis), taking into account the guidelines for the preparation of bachelor theses; short seminar talk (max. 10 min.) + subsequent discussion (max. 5 min)
