Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This field course focuses on advanced concepts in the ecology of low-order streams. It provides introductury lectures on stream ecology, longitudinal zonation, organismic drift, geochemistry and biofilm ecology which prepare a series of field trips at a third-order forest stream in the Wienerwald area. Team work will deal with the importance of catchment structures for the energy budget, retention, processing of leaf litter, fuctional feeding groups of macrozoobenthos, organismic drift and the role of the hyporheic zone. In the field, practical skills such as stream reconnaissance, hydological methodology, bed morphology and stream-catchment-interactions, among others, are trained. Team work is strongly encouraged. In the lab, data are processed and important working techniques are demonstrated.
Assessment and permitted materials
Attendance control, oral group presentation of project outcomes, finally written group protocols at the end of the course.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The participants are aware of the most important ecological principles acting in low-order streams and of the significance of stream-hyporheos and stream-catchment interactions. Students are able to perform stream reconnaissance and sample macrozoobenthos and drift and to interprete retention data. In addition, students are able to use the bioindication potential of stream biota.
Examination topics
Introductory lectures (powerpoint presentations), guided field work (mapping, equipment training, data collection) at a woodland stream and guided as well as unguided data analyses in the lab. Handouts are distributed at the start of the course.
