Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to how biodiversity research can be supported and advanced by molecular methods. Special emphasis will be placed on DNA barcoding and related methods. Numerous examples from different animal groups will be presented, but also the molecular and theoretical basis, limitations and different methodological approaches will be explained.
• Evolutionary biology basics
• Species concepts / species delimitation
• The use of DNA barcoding in integrative taxonomy
• Limitations of DNA barcoding (hybridization / introgression)
• genetic analysis of museum material / the importance of natural history collections
• application in biodiversity research and environmental protection (monitoring)
• application in forensics / "wildlife forensics
• Austrian Barcode of Life (ABOL) - examples: Dragonflies, molluscs, vertebrates
• Examples from water monitoring
• Different marker systems, next generation sequencing methods
• metabarcoding / eDNA (environmental DNA

Assessment and permitted materials

1st appointment is a written exam, subsequently an oral exam can be taken.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Basic understanding of the lecture content, for written exam: 50% of the points.
