Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will teach and practice the elements of scientific work with particular reference to human behavioural biology. This includes i) research, selection, and organization of literature, ii) preparation of scientific reports and peer-review, iii) presentation of results at professional meetings and to lay audiences, iv) knowledge of research funding opportunities, v) proposal preparation and application in academic and non-academic contexts, vi) application of expertise in commercial settings. Traditional and modern formats of scientific culture are considered (e.g., preprints, pre-registration, and open access). Other topics include the management of scientific knowledge, intellectual property, and good scientific practice.

Assessment and permitted materials

Quality of independently developed materials, oral participation, final written test.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance, oral participation, short presentations, editing of scientific texts.

Examination topics

Elements of scientific practice (see objectives, content and methods) as well as the ability to implement them in practice (e.g. topic-specific literature collection, preparation and presentation of information).
