Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this seminar is to learn about and practice fundamental aspects of scientific work with regard to the formal structure of a bachelor thesis and scientific writing writing in the natural sciences.

Contents: There will be one special topic for each unit.
For example:
-- Principles of scientific work, ethics
-- Search for literature (Where? How?) and criteria for quality assurance (several topics)
-- Formal structure of a scientific publication and thesis (several topics)
-- Layout and aesthetics
-- Figures & tables
-- Citations and references
Popular software for word processing, and management of the literature and citations.

Methods: supervised literature search in relation to the specific topics, the students acquire knowledge with regard to a topic and share this knowledge via an oral presentation (approx. 15 minutes) and handouts, finally there will be a short lecture focusing on the most relevant points, hands-on training (your laptop, computer rooms).

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance, active participation, oral presentation including slides and handouts, exercises.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance of more than 80% of the courses and a minimum of 51 points are required for the successful completion of the course. The single components are weighted as follows: discussions and active participation (10 points), oral presentation (30 points) with handouts (20 points), two pieces of homework (Citations, Abstract => 20 points each).
If good scientific practice is violated in any assessment, you will fail to pass the course.
