Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We will visit five locations in and around Vienna (close vicinity). The sites are prime examples for restoration measures of water bodies. We will discuss anthropogenic impacts and demonstrate possible solutions to overcome the problems associated with eutrophication, canalization, ect. The course provides insights into applied aquatic ecology. Basic limnological knowledge will be taught, including measurements and short experiments to demonstrate the effects of the restoration measures.
Scheduled locations are:
Mo, 24.4. 9 to 13 pm: Heustadelwasser and Donauinsel (excursion with bicycles; Neptunanlage, renaturation of shoreline areas)
Mo, 8.5. 9 to 9 bis 13 pm: Liesingbach (excursion with bicycles; renaturation)
Mo, 15.5. 9 to 13 pm: Wienfluss (comparison of channel versus restored stretch)
Mo, 12.6. 9 to 13 pm: Kahrteich (sampling with boats; hypolimnetic areation)
Mo, 19.6. 9 to 15 pm: Alte Donau, Kaiserwasser, Wasserpark (boat trip included; harvest of macrophytes und -deposition, resettlements of water plants, soil filters, blocking wells, renaturation of shoreline areas)
